Laboratory cupboards and cleanroom cupboards: no more contamination

You won’t get far with conventional steel cupboards in laboratories and cleanrooms subject to strict regulations. After all, this is where you occasionally handle hazardous substances and therefore need to avoid contamination while ensuring your own safety and that of your work materials. For this reason alone, both legislators and common sense have high expectations of laboratory cupboards and cleanroom cupboards.

Which specifications must laboratory cupboards and cleanroom cupboards meet?

The boundary between a laboratory and cleanroom is often fuzzy, but the boundary between a conventional steel cupboard and a cupboard suitable for a laboratory or cleanroom is not. Cupboards used in these areas of the company should exhibit the following characteristics:

  • Made of stainless steel (cleanroom) or moulded chipboard with a resin coating (laboratory)

  • Resistant to cold, heat, moisture and chemicals

  • Absolutely hygienic

  • Easy to clean and disinfect

  • With options to compensate uneven flooring

  • Hardwearing and corrosion resistant

  • Lockable or theft proof

For the storage of certain chemicals, additional environmental cupboards must be used or measures to ensure safe hazardous goods storage must be taken.

What is the difference between laboratory cupboards and cleanroom cupboards?

In a medical laboratory or a quality assurance facility, the particle concentration is less important than the general prevention of your samples being contaminated.

High quality laboratory cupboards – from laboratory chemical cupboards to laboratory base cupboards – therefore do not have to be made of stainless steel. Melamine coated surfaces are easy and effective to clean, while height adjustable shelves allow the cupboards to be adapted flexibly. A locking mechanism is also a legal requirement to prevent unauthorised access to chemicals or samples.

Particles shouldn’t stand a chance in the cleanroom. Although a filter and pump system is the best way to ensure this, cleanroom cupboards also form an important pillar within the room concept. Hardwearing surfaces that do not retain particles or pathogens of any kind are essential within this environment. Flush fitting stainless steel cupboards are the right choice.

How do I find the right laboratory cupboards and cleanroom cupboards?

The range of products available at kaiserkraft is reflective of the current legal status. Which material and which laboratory cupboards or cleanroom cupboards are approved for your needs is clearly indicated in the respective guidelines, equipment and occupational health and safety regulations.

These include DIN 14470 for storage cupboards and SN EN 14727 ''Laboratory furniture – Storage units for laboratories – Requirements and test methods''. For cleanrooms, technical rules VDI 2083 Part 4.1 apply, among others.
